Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, when hormone levels begin to change. It often starts in your 40s, sometimes earlier, and can last several years. Because the symptoms are so varied, many women don't realise what's happening.

Common early signs

  • Changes to your cycle: shorter, longer, heavier or lighter periods.
  • Sleep problems and night sweats.
  • New anxiety, irritability or low mood.
  • Brain fog and trouble concentrating.
  • Hot flushes, joint aches and headaches.

What can help

Support ranges from lifestyle changes and non-hormonal treatments to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). For many women, HRT is safe and highly effective, but it's a personal decision best made with a clinician who knows your history.
